Head Start and PreK

Head Start and Pre-K provide free pre-school to eligible 3- to 5-year-old children. Programs provide family engagement services, speech & language therapy, mental health consulting, hearing & vision screening, nutritional counseling, and limited transportation.

ENROLLING 4-year old children today!

Are you looking for an excellent Pre-K program for your children?  If the answer is yes then look no further.  Community Action Council of Howard County Head Start (full day, 51-weeks) is recruiting 4-year old children for the 2016-2017 school years.  Head Start is a part of a national program administered by the Office of Head Start, Administration for Children and Families, Federal Department of Health and Human Services.  Head Start’s goal is to promote the school readiness of children by enhancing their cognitive, social/emotional development.  Pre-K Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • Children must have been 4 by September 1, 2016
  • Families must meet the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines
  • Families must be residents of Howard County

Eligibility Requirements

Free Pre-School for income eligible families with children ages 3-5

  • Children must turn 4 by September 1, 2016 to be enrolled in Pre-K Classes
  • Children must be 3 to be enrolled in Head Start mixed classes.
  • If your child is currently 3 years old, you can apply now.
  • If your child is not currently 3 years old, COMPLETED applications will be accepted 30 days prior to the child’s birthday. If space is not available the child will be placed on the waiting list.
  • Foster children are automatically qualified. Children with disabilities and/or IEP are encouraged to apply.

      • Pay Stubs (2 consecutive)
      • Prior year Income Tax Return

      • Social Security Benefit Letter
      • Letter from Employer stating income
