Hello! Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Community Action Council of Howard County! We offer individual and group opportunities as well as one time or consistent volunteering opportunities. Please see the areas for volunteering below.

Community Garden

Our Community Garden allows us the opportunity to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for our families at the Food Bank. Depending upon the season, volunteers will help with “hands-on gardening” such as building beds, planting, weeding, watering, and overall maintaining the garden. The program provides all of the tools and garden equipment needed for each project, however you are encouraged to bring gardening gloves.

Must be 16 years or older to volunteer without a parent or Guardian.

Opportunities are available for groups Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Limited Saturday opportunities may be available, and must be arranged with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Food Bank

The Howard County Food Bank is a community resource where individuals and families, with proper documentation certifying their eligibility, shop for needed food and other personal items. Volunteers will help sort, organize, and stock food products, including possibly lifting of up to 25 pounds. Volunteers may also assist clients during distribution.

Must be 16 years or older to volunteer without a parent or Guardian.

Opportunities are available Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Head Start Program

Head Start provides pre-school experiences and family support services for children ages 3 to 5 who live at or below the poverty level. Volunteers will encourage children to learn and explore through play. Volunteers will assist teachers with various activities such as art projects, music, exercise, and story time.

Must be at least 18 years old to volunteer at Head Start.

Opportunities are available Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.

CAC Main Office

Volunteers will engage in a variety of events throughout the year to raise awareness and responsiveness to the needs of low-income families in our community. In addition, volunteers perform a variety of administrative and staff support duties for our CAC departments which require a range of skills and knowledge. Volunteers help with such duties as filing, completing computer data entry, and assisting with large mailings.

Most projects require you to be 18 years or older.

Opportunities are available Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Group Opportunities

We offer volunteer opportunities for groups of 5-20 individuals at most of our locations. Please contact the volunteer coordinator via email to schedule a time for your group to volunteer.
